COVID-19 OUTBREAK STATISTICS
At the end of 2019, Novel
coronavirus was identified when a clump of pneumonia cases was reported in Wuhan,
China. It led to rapid spread all over the Wuhan province of China and culminated as
a pandemic.
But this isn’t a new virus. It is found to be
the mutated version of SARS which had affected China very badly back in 2003
but not much globally.
WHERE DID IT COME FROM??
WHERE DID IT COME FROM??
The origin of COVID-19 is not yet
confirmed but there are some possible assumptions. One assumption is that it might have spread from the wet markets of China where folks
slaughter various kinds of wild animals for consumption. A few articles say that it has been originated from bats and spread to humans on
consuming them. The second one is that it might have been started from China’s most advanced virus research
laboratory, Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV). The primary outbreak remains a mystery and
yet China is under a lot of Global pressure due to lack of transparency.
A BRIEF ABOUT THE PREVIOUS PANDEMIC
Swine flu outbreak in 2009 harmed all classes of
society. Nearly 60.8 million people were infected and about 2.73 million people
were hospitalized and it had killed around 203 thousand people across the world. It had been a dreadful situation all over the world.
After 9 years, a similar situation has arisen which is affecting the whole
world in many ways.
LOOKING AT THE NUMBERS!
Right
after China, it immediately affected countries like Italy, Iran due to travellers
from China. Almost 215 countries have reported positive cases including
China(mainland) until now. Confirmed COVID-19 cases increased ten-fold in less than a month, from
100,000 in the first week of March to more than a million by the 2nd
of April and Nearly 30 folds, i.e., 3.35 million positive cases have been reported as on May 4th . The death total death count has reached 243 thousand and yet dynamic. Almost
all countries have been hit hard both economically and socially. (https://covid19.who.int/)
The increment in the positive cases is exponential. The
actual death toll is likely to be more than the confirmed death reports due to
lack of testing equipment and daily updates may not be precise due to late
reporting. The number of actual COVID cases may not be the same as that of confirmed. We know only the statistics of tested people.
Well, this happened in China about 17 days ago. They revised their death count from 3689 to more than 4600. This revised figure was due to some unreported cases, records kept at funeral homes, unrecorded deaths that took place outside the hospitals.

WHAT IS THE SITUATION IN SOME OF THE COUNTRIES??
World Health Organisation (WHO) had put up a few guidelines regarding keeping oneself clean, maintaining social
distance, lockdown and participation in large gatherings. Regardless of
being called as Developed countries, many didn’t take immediate steps to follow
the guidelines given related to lockdown which caused a huge outbreak. Italy
and the USA are major examples of this. But it is not the same in the case of
South Africa as they have taken good measures and maintained a low number of
cases. (https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019/advice-for-public)
Some countries have approached in a different way to fight
this. A few examples are Sweden, Singapore, Hong Kong. And Vietnam’s strategy
is also quite different and many other countries can try to follow.
Coming to India, why isn't it hit hard?? And what is the
strategy?
Let's look at these in the coming posts!
